When your pencil is out of lead, you remove the top, and shake it, and keep pushing in and out, in and out, on the eraser until the new piece shows through the end. Those erasers were originally Green.(If you have the plastic cartridge type, the cartridge will snap right out of the middle of the pencil. If you run out of lead, you can add more underneath the white eraser. Again, you just snap it back in, and keep pressing in and out on the eraser until the next piece comes through the tip. (0.7mm) The newest pencils are 0.7mm, the change happened around 2011, they have the protruding end again, which advances the new lead by clicking the eraser several times in and out. The eraser colors were originally Blue. It originally came, and still uses the red or more (orange) color eraser.
