This auction is for a 24 COUNT (mostly) WHITMAN HARDCOVER BOOK LOT ! The vast majority of these are “WHITMAN Authorized TV Adventures” related books. Two others are by Grosset & Dunlap. They were picked up over the years whenever I came across them. I liked the book covers! The conditions of the books vary widely. THEY ARE ALL IN USED CONDITION…so don’t expect the world. Some have writing in them, peeling of the laminate, rough covers, or broken bindings. Check out individual descriptions below… 1. THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. — THE AFFAIR OF THE GENTLE SABOTEUR — #1541. There is a line of tape right down the binding of the front cover. The paper is broken in a line going down on the inside in the same area (the tape is most likely holding the cover on to the side binding). The laminate has peeled off around the front and back covers around the binding area. Good. 2. I SPY — MESSAGE FROM MOSCOW — #1542. White wear appears all around the binding. There is some spotting, mostly on the front cover, due to the book being compressed between other books in a book case for decades (this was my book since the 1960s). Good. 3. COMBAT! — THE COUNTERATTACK — #1520. Some white wear along the binding edges. Some of the laminate is starting to flake off, mostly around the bottom right area of the binding. Very good. 4. FLIPPER — THE MYSTERY OF THE BLACK SCHOONER — #2324. Surprisingly, this book is in excellent condition. There is a little white wear on the top and bottom of the side binding. One inside page had a folded corner. A great looking cover. 5. HAWAII FIVE-O #1 — TOP SECRET — #1517. The cover of this one looks fine. A name is written on the inside of the first page. One page had a small bend in the corner. 6. HAWAII FIVE-O #2 — TOP SECRET — #1517. A lot of cover wear on this duplicate copy. A tear appears on the top binding edge. 7. SEA HUNT — #1541. Some laminate peeling along the front and back edges of the binding, with corner wear on the top and bottom of the binding. The paper is broken down in a line on the front and back of the inside covers, and an address sticker is on the bottom right of the first page. Good. 8. THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES — THE SAGA OF WILDCAT CREEK — #1572. Most of the laminate has peeled off (below Granny and Elly faces, and above “Beverly” on the front cover). The covers have wear, and a price is written in the top right corner of the first page. The inside paper is broken along the inside seams of both the front and back cover (more so inside the back). Good. 9. CIRCUS BOY — WAR ON WHEELS — #1578. Ahhh…Micky Dolenz of The Monkees! I thought I’d get this autographed someday, but never did. The laminate has peeled off above the elephant’s head. Wear appears on the corners of the top and bottom of the binding, and there is a break along the back edge binding. The inside paper is slightly broken along the inside of the front and back covers. A bit of paper is missing on the bottom right corner of the inside front cover, and the first page is loose at the very top. Finally, as proof that this copy is from 1958, there is a note written on the inside page from a child’s grandmother dated 12/58, and says “To our baby Craig, Now read this and then tell me about it. Great Grandma”. Good. 10. GILLIGAN’S ISLAND — #1566. I love the cover of this book! There is wear along the binding, mostly along the very top and bottom of the topside of the binding. Normal shelf wear on the cover. When you open the front cover, the inside paper lining is broken down the length of the book. Very good. 11. VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA — #1511. There’s two copies of this. This one has laminate on the cover. There are some light scratches on the back cover. The laminate is starting to peel on the very bottom left corner, and there is also some light white wear at the top and bottom of the side binding. Very good. 12. VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA — #1511. This is the second copy, and it never came laminated. The binding is shot, as there are portions missing from the top and bottom of the side binding, and the top left edge of the cover is split with the inside threads showing. A few pages inside are bent (small). Good. 13. RED RIDER — …AND THE THUNDER TRAIL — #1547. The first fifty pages look like there’s an old water stain in the bottom right corner. Over the years, something got stuck to both covers. A patch appears on the front cover to the left of the cowboy’s face, and some newspaper print is stuck on the back cover to the right of the young Indian boys face. A couple breaks in the binding are along the top front and middle back. Good. 14. THE MISSADVENTURES OF MERLIN JONES — #1521. Some white wear on the side binding, mostly at the top and bottom. The laminate is starting to peel at the bottom around the binding. The inside cover paper has broken in the crease. 15. ANNETTE — MYSTERY AT MEDICINE WHEEL — #1512. Edge wear along the binding, and on the four corners on the right side of the covers. Laminate is missing where the white wear is. Parts of the cover painting (by the back of the horses head and ear) look like they are missing. Good. 16. HIGH CHAPARRAL — APACHE WAY — #1519. This was mine as a youngster. Some small dots of white wear appear, and the regular wear at the top and bottom of the side binding. Fairly good. 17. PATTY DUKE — …AND MYSTERY MANSION — #1514. The regular binding and cover corner wear. Some breaks in the bottom binding appear. Half of the first inside page has a child’s name and address written in it. The paper is slightly broken down along the inside page (where the inside hardcover meets the first page). Very good. 18. PATTY DUKE — …AND THE ADVENTURE OF THE CHINESE JUNK — #2334. Very, very good! This book never had laminate on it. Other than a touch of wear on the very edges of the top and bottom of the side binding, no wear marks appear on the covers. 19. MOD SQUAD — ASSIGNMENT: THE ARRANGER — #1538. This copy looks pretty good. A price stamp in the front cover, and the normal cover wear. Very good. 20. MOD SQUAD — ASSIGNMENT: THE HIDEOUT — #1517. The first inside page has been torn out. This page showed the inside design graphic on one side, and the reverse was blank. It looks like there was a price written in magic marker on the top right corner of the front cover. White wear along the bottom and top edges of the cover and binding. There is some coloring in of the graphic (a flower) in the back inside cover. Some black wear/scuffs mainly on the back cover. 21. THE POWER BOYS — THE MYSTERY OF THE VANISHING LADY — These next four books were mine as a child. Top and bottom binding edge wear, with a small tear along the top of the back cover edge. A price sticker appears on the cover. 22. ADVENTURE CALLING — NINE GREAT STORIES OF THE OUTDOORS — Wear appears mainly at the top and bottom of the side binding. A tear can be seen on the bottom of the binding. 23. RICK BRANT — THE ELECTRONIC MIND READER — #8812. There is a Macy’s price sticker on the cover. The pages are as white as the day I received these decades ago. The John Blaine-authored books are not Whitman books, but were published by Grosset & Dunlap. Some slight wear appears on the top and bottom edges of the binding. 24. RICK BRANT — THE PHANTOM SHARK — #8806. Same as above, but slightly less wear on the binding edges. I may have missed a few minor things, but I think from the descriptions provided, you get the general idea. I don’t know if all the Whitman books are the same, but to me, most of these do not look like the inside pages were ever glued to the inside of the binding. If you open the books and laid them out flat, you could see through the space between the binding and inside of the book. Again, I don’t know if the books were ever glued to the bindings or not. Ten of the books are like this, and they all seem to be ones that are laminated. The non-laminated books are not like this. If I find any other Whitman books, I will include them for free. You never know what I’ll find hidden in a box somewhere… On a final note; I can remember picking out my personal copies of these books at a department store during the month of my birthday. The books were given out for free to kids on their birthday. You would pick a book out of a big drawer of books. No idea why I didn’t pick Star Trek or The Monkees out instead of High Chaparral! Lo and behold! I was looking through the very last book to write up a description, and what do I find but a fifty-five year old “GERTZ PIE CLUB” birthday slip!!!
